Worm Farm

 

We gathered a lot of fertilizer for the new gardens in front of the school hall. It seemed like a hundred bucket loads, but really it was only 15 so far.

 After reading Junior Journal 44 this week we are following the instructions to make our own. We spent hours ripping paper and our fingers were ready to drop off. (can you tell we have been learning about exaggerating too.)

Positive Ponchos

Starting Term 3 off on the right foot. After trying to find all the positive that students do to help the more active students stay on task in Term 2. We thought we would encourage the students to find positive things to say about each other using Positive Poncho.

We created a poncho each using two colours of paper the top one we folded into 8 before cutting to make a pattern. Then we unfolded it and glued it to the second piece before cutting out the hole for our head to pass through. 

After going through a range of words that students could use we broke into groups and selected a word they thought matched the person. This part was quite tricky to start with they wanted to put words on their own poncho, then some tried telling people what to put on their poncho. The blue words are our school values.

Getting Out and About - Highwire

It was a great day the rain was staying away, which was great as we had to walk 10-15 minutes down the road to Highwire. A great facility who we link with whenever possible and time allows. The facilitators down there Chelsea, AJ and others, all organised by Mr Hopkins provided a couple of hours of fun activities developing teamwork and communication. 

Creating Patterns

Over the last few weeks, we have been looking at patterns. We start with Samoan Language week and creating Sasa and Siapo. Then we created Kowhaiwhai patterns. Each pattern we learnt told a story.

Hot Soup for Lunch

Using the soup packets we received lunch was made the night before in a crockpot and left cooking. Early in the morning, we added Chayotes that were given to us by Whaea Elena.

The best part was it was hot and we could dip our bread into it.

Parachute Fun

First, we would like to thank Our Board Chair for giving us the parachute we had a lot of fun with them.

 

The Parachute

“Yay!” Everyone shouted we got up and rolled the parachute until it was even. When it was all even everyone waited for the teacher to say tahi, rua, toru wha. When the teacher shouted tahi, rua, toru wha everyone threw their arms up, holding the parachute and waved to each other. We did it again and our teacher yelled out tahi, rua, toru wha. Then we all threw it up but this time we left it up and went under the parachute instead. It looked kind of like Patrick’s house but it was smaller and the color was grey. We all got up and our teacher grabbed a bag of bean bags and tossed them onto the parachute. We had to try and keep the bean bags on the side of the parachute there was a kind of big hole in the middle of the parachute and we had to try and not let the bean bags in the middle of the parachute. 

Covid Investigation

Covid Level 2 we have over half of Tui students back at school. It has been great to see so many faces and catch-up with everyone and how each whanau survived lockdown.

We discussed many questions to help students feel safe returning to school and help them feel informed about what happened. 

What is Covid-19?

Students created a poem and acted like a lung breathing in and out.

How does Covid-19 spread?

The Students wanted to act it out: They were pretending to cough, sneeze and spit onto the ground or our hands and forgetting to clean our hands then touching someone else. (Please remember we were acting we did wash our hands thoroughly when we were finished before we actually touched someone.)

 

What does eliminating Covid-19 mean?

We had created a skit: One person cleaning away the germs (in art shirts once clean they were removed) and they became cleaners, helping to sanitize and clean the area.

Waka Journey - Dance and Drama

We have been learning how people travelled over the oceans to get to new land often to start their lives over from scratch. There were many hardships they faced.

 We have created a small dance and drama to show the journey they faced to the music of Misey Rika's Tangaroa Whakamautai

Summer Field Day 2020 - Touch

Mrs Mundy organised us into two teams, one in each groups so we didn't play each other. She even had to ref a couple of times, it was okay when she remembered to count the touches correctly. It was a great day and even though there was a small shower the day was hot and tiring.

Summer Field Day 2020 - Cricket

We have been training with MR Church for the last 5 weeks. We have learn a lot about catching and hitting the ball. Cricket is a team game, that means we can't leave everything up to one person, we all have to do our bit.

The neighbour we helped clean her yard came into today to say thank you, and she brought cakes for us. Yummy!!

Dealing with Feelings and Decision Making

WALHT share our feelings and why sometimes we don't make the best decisions. I learnt sometimes I can be a teddy bear wanting everyone to be happy, and sometimes I can be as sly as a fox to make sure I get things down the way I want. I really want to be wise like an owl!

Reciprocal Teaching in Reading

We are revisiting how to be an effective group leader or teacher and helping others and ourselves to learn in reading. Predicting can happen at the beginning before we read or before reading the next part. We are reading about Celebrations and have picked once we can investigate in a small group.

Herd are the two charts we are using to help us, one reminds us of the steps and what they mean. The other reminds us how we can do each step.
